What are Active Release Techniques?

Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.)

Active Release Techniques is a soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.  It is so unique it was awarded a medical patent.

What is an Active Release Tehniques (ART) treatment like?

Every Active Release Techniques (ART) session is  a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of the tissues.

When the provider finds scar tissue, they treat the area by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These are over 500 specific treatment protocols unique to Active Release Techniques. Providers are able to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. Active Release Techniques is not a cookie-cutter approach.  Our doctors maintain their certifications and are constantly learning innovative protocols developed by ART.

Conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with Active Release Techniques:

Most of these injuries can be worsened by overusing a certain muscle group.

  • Golf Injuries

  • Sciatica
  • Plantar Faciitis
  • Knee Problems including ITB syndrome
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Foot and Ankle Pain

How do overuse conditions occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • accumulation of tears (micro & repetitive trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen to the tissues (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce dense scar tissue that gets laid down in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker.  Tension on tendons will eventually cause tendonitis.  Tension within tissue can also cause nerves to become trapped.  This can reduce your range of motion, decrease your strength, and cause you to experience pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.
