1. When did you know you wanted to become a chiropractor?

While playing ice hockey for the Pittsburgh Junior Penguins, I injured my back so badly that I could barely walk. My team chiropractor worked on me before, during, and after games so that I could continue to play. I was so grateful that he was able to keep me in the game that I decided that I wanted to help others in a similar manner.

2. What do you wish more people knew about chiropractic care?

I wish more people understood that not all chiropractors practice identically. One big thing that I’ve heard from many people is that chiropractors simply “crack my back” and send me out the door. At our office, we utilize soft tissue techniques, rehabilitation exercises, and adjusting in order to achieve the greatest outcome for the patient.

3. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a chiropractor?

Easy answer here. Helping people regain control of their health. Movement and exercise is a key component in physical and emotional health. Chronic pain can really take its toll on the body and mind. Here at Norwood Chiropractic, we can help you navigate freedom of movement rather than simply avoiding common daily or recreational activities.

4. What is the most challenging part of your job?

The most challenging component would have to be dealing with insurance companies. They all seem to have different requirements and its important to stay on top of it to ensure that the patient is covered as they deserve to be.

Challenging personal dilemma: Music selection when I type up patient notes. It can be very challenging to choose between Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson.

5. What is one thing people can do to stay proactive and healthy?

My favorite saying is “move well and move often.” Many jobs require people to be seated for extended periods of time. Simply getting up to walk around and reverse the seated posture can do wonders for the entire body, but specifically the low back and neck.

One method I like is to choose 3 exercises which can be repeated throughout the day. Choose a lower body exercise ( ex. squats, lunges), upper body exercise (ex. push ups), and a stretching/meditative position (ex. child’s pose). When you are ready for a posture break, perform 1-2 rounds of 10-15 repetitions. Aim to perform multiple times throughout the day when you have 3-4 minutes to spare.

6. What is a condition you treat that most people may not realize?

I treat foot pain such as plantar fasciitis very frequently but I’ve noticed that patients have typically seen multiple clinicians before coming to our office. They go from doctor to doctor looking for the “fix” and never realized that chiropractors could help with this problem.

7. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love to play hockey, go dancing, exercise, and spend time with family and friends.

8. What food can you not live without?

Sushi

9. What’s your favorite song to dance to?

This question is not fair. They are all “my jams.” Currently, I’d have to say Despacito.

10. How do you take your coffee?

I usually just grab it with my hands…

11. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Every mistake in life is a learning opportunity. Don’t be afraid to make one.

12. A quote that inspires me daily:

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.  — Thomas Edison
